The population in the central village in Pabal is about 350, but the total population, including surrounding hamlets, is approximately 9000. Pabal's size is slowly increasing.
Population Growth
Though some people leave to attend university, people come from surrounding areas because of the market place in Pabal. It is thought that the growth in Pabal encourages people to stay. Villagers also expected that due to a new dam, water will not be an issue, and businesses can be more successful. When asked why a person would choose to stay in Pabal, villagers mentioned: encouraging people to go to Vigyan Ashram, helping Pabal grow, making more money than in smaller villages, staying close to family, cheaper rent than in cities. People felt that the major reason people leave Pabal is to attend University in Pune.
